First Date Spotlight: Da Poetry Lounge

Da Poetry Lounge is a weekly event at the Greenway Court Theater where people from all walks of life share their poems in front of an audience. It’s a unique place to take a girl who enjoys the arts. I liked how it was a fun, casual first date that provides the opportunity to do something off-the-beaten path and share an engaging experience.

When: Every Tuesday night from 9:00pm-Midnight

Where: Green Way Court Theater (544 N. Fairfax Blvd, near the intersection of Fairfax and Melrose)

(Ratings are on a scale of 1-10)

Cultural Significance: 8.0 As the longest running Spoken Word event in Los Angeles, chances are your date has never even heard of Da Poetry Lounge, providing a nice opportunity to show her a different side of the city. It is generally recommended for people who like theater, concerts and live events.

Economical: 10.0 At a cost of only $5 a person for 2-3 hours of live entertainment, it won’t take much out of your pocket. Bring a dessert and a warm beverage for you and your date to snack on while waiting in line.

Regularity: 9.0 It’s EVERY Tuesday night, so if you meet someone exciting on the weekend, it’s a great, casual follow-up activity. Also, most people don’t do much on a Tuesday evening, and if it goes well, there’s the upcoming weekend to plan something more intimate.

Fun: 8.0 When I went, my date and I were moved by some poets and laughing at the comical musings from others. Granted, not ever poem was a hit, but the majority were fascinating windows into each speaker’s soul. One of the best moments was when a local comedian did a stand-up that was well received.

Overall Rating: 9.0 Da Poetry Lounge is an excellent first date for someone who enjoys live performances and is open to trying new artsy things. It’s expensive, casual and easily allows conversation to flow around the event and poets, which is always better than the typical dinner/interview date.
