Scientists’ research: Marriage after meeting online

The authors of the new research published in the USA are sure that meeting on the Internet more often leads to a strong and happy marriage. According to the statistics, a partner who is found on the Web is richer and more educated than a partner who managed to get acquainted with through friends, at work or in an educational institution.

The authors analyzed the data that were obtained after a survey of 19 thousand people who got married between 2009 and 2016. 35% of respondents got acquainted with their future loved ones on the Internet - this giant figure itself surprised experts. At the same time, only 45% of the meetings were made due to dating sites, future spouses were successfully acquainted on the pages of social networks, blogs and forums, as well as in classifieds ads m4w or w4m.

"Surprisingly, we found out that marriages that were made after online dating, can be considered more effective," – says John Cacioppo, a psychologist at the University of Illinois, Chicago, who led the research team.

The scientist noted that at the time of the survey only 6% of marriages concluded after dating on the Internet fell apart. For family unions this indicator was 8%. In addition, the researchers noted a higher satisfaction with marriage, which is measured on a seven-point scale. For married couples who get married after online dating this number is 5.6%, and for the remaining families - 5.5%.

However, some experts criticized the methodology used in the research. So, Eli Finkel, a psychologist from the Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois is sure: the errors due to the characteristics of online surveys can exceed the real difference in the sought-for indicators. The scientist drew attention to the fact that 19 thousand completed questionnaires were analyzed, while about half of people simply did not complete the questionnaire until the end. "Perhaps the people who filled out the questionnaire are simply more patient by nature, does this fact make them more patient and married?" Suggested Finkel.

Experts stated that Internet services and social networks lead to revolutionary changes in people's way of life. In social networks, the issue of the exchange of services has already been resolved, the issue of payments has been practically resolved, part of the exchanges have been commercialized, said Vladimir Knyaginin, the director of the Center for Strategic Research.
